Based out of New York area, Mondevices INC, has created the first baby monitor in a button. Monbaby is an award winning technology that transmits a visual log of baby’s breathing motions to a parent’s smartphone or any other Bluetooth capable device to ensure peace of mind and sound sleep for all.
The story of Monbaby started when Arturas Vaitaitis, the founder of Mondevices, had his first son 8 years ago.
“As a new parent, I could not sleep worrying that something was wrong if everything was quiet. I'd wake up in the middle of the night, worried about SIDS, would go up to my son and would check that he is sleeping fine, occasionally waking him up in the process. I wished such product was on a market back then”, says Arturas Vaitaitis.
For the past two years Mondevices team worked on this product. Now Monbaby is a fully functional prototype in its 5th iteration, almost ready for manufacturing at a local facility in NJ. We expect to start shipping the product in October of this year.
First of a kind
“When we started working on this path in 2011, there was no competition and we quickly recognized the potential of this product and the impact it could have on parents and on newborns”, says Arturas Vaitaitis.
This product was a finalist in the IWC Bluetooth competition in 2012 and was invited to a Freescale booth in CES 2012 in Las Vegas. This year, Monbaby won a prize at the Wearable Technologies conference in in Smart Clothing category for "Smart Button" technology.
Now there is a new crop of startups that alleviate anxiety of new parents, though Mondevices believe that the Monbaby product is superior, mostly because of its universal attachment form factor.
Monbaby monitor looks like a button, a smart button that snaps anywhere on clothing. This universal enclosure feature makes this technology applicable to all ages. It snaps just as easily on elderly parents’ pajamas and on a newborn child's onesie. Even though this technology can be applied universally, Mondevices developed the first product, Monbaby, for the parents of newborns and young children.
Small kids cannot complain about their sleep before they learn how to speak. Monbaby monitor measures child’s breathing, activity and movements and then transmits data to parent’s smartphone. Parents will be able to configure real-time alerts on their smartphone for conditions that they are concerned about. They will get alerts and information about their child’s sleep in the framework of push notifications, so that they could sleep with peace of mind.
The method of attachment and underlying technology has a patent pending.
Monbaby measures baby movements caused by child’s breathing and sends data to parent’s smart phone over Bluetooth Low Energy or to any Bluetooth capable device. Monbaby is accelerometer based wearable sensor that measures motion.
Measurements are done in real-time, 5 times per second and transmitted over Bluetooth (4.0) Low Energy to a smartphone app (iPhone), which displays information about in a convenient, easy-to-understand manner. The sensor is powered by 3V coin-cell battery giving 5 weeks of constant use and 1 year in passive mode. The antenna range of 200 ft. easily covers a large house.
Additional features include position measurements, orientation, and activity levels. Monbaby detects abrupt turns and falls, which are handy when a growing child will start getting out of the crib! The Monbaby technology will continue to grow and evolve with a child.
Orientation In the 1994’s,“Back to Sleep” campaign began, with the goal of educating parents and caregivers about ways to reduce the risk of SIDS. One of the risk factors has been an infant sleeping on its stomach. Campaign managed to reduce mortality rates from SIDS by 100%. One of Monbaby features is an orientation alert that will notify parents if their child rolled over and is sleeping face down.
Activity Level The Monbaby monitor is armed with a powerful 14bit accelerometer that measures the child’s activity levels during the sleep. Monbaby iPhone application sends the data to a computer in the cloud where much thorough analysis happen. Results of the analysis will help parents to monitor the quality of their children sleep.
The real power of this product are internal powerful algorithms that crunch and turn raw data into a dashboard of risk health factors, visual event logs and real time alarms about baby roll-overs, sleeping on a stomach, breathing frequency, excessive fussing, sleeping patterns etc. Eventually, the software will help parents to analyze and optimize their children sleep and detect best sleeping conditions.
“We are happy that we can lift parent’s anxiety about their babies well-being and offer them peace of mind at an attractive price point.” Monbaby is planned to retail for $119.
“We noticed a problem that there are plenty of activity trackers for healthy consumers, athletes in particular, and not nearly enough, in my opinion, for consumers who need health tracking the most: elderly, chronically ill and newborns. We have created a solution in a convenient form factor of a “smart button” that is applicable to all ages. It will be unnoticeable by elderly parents in the need of care and will look cute on a child.”, says Arturas Vaitaitis.
In our day and age, our cars carry a great many sensors that constantly monitor car's safety and performance, whereas our bodies, surely much more valuable possessions, lack these mechanisms. Mondevices believe that in the future it will change. Many wearable sensors will aggregate data into a personalized health dashboard. Monbaby is a step towards the future of real-time, ongoing diagnosis, where instead of going to a doctor, doctors will call us, once they see anything alarming on our health dashboard.
