Green Options, a Berkeley-based renewable energy and green lifestyle company, has launched its web portal, GreenOptions.com, to the public. Visitors to the site will find a wealth of tips and information on how to incorporate environmentally-friendly choices into their lifestyle without major disruptions or costs. The new site features a blog written by nationally-recognized writers from the “Green Blogosphere,” a “Green Life Guide” with information on a wide range of lifestyle subjects, the “Green Report,” which tracks environmentally-focused news developments, and a discussion forum for interacting with other people interested in “Greening the Good Life.”
“Over the past year, we’ve seen many exciting developments that show environmental consciousness has reached a tipping point,” said Green Options CEO David Anderson. “At the same time, many people feel overwhelmed by these developments. Climate change, species extinction and energy transitions are huge issues, and the average person wonders ‘What can I do about these problems?’ At Green Options, they’ll find many answers to this question that don’t require sacrificing comfort and convenience, or breaking their budgets.”
Users will find this information in easily-accessible formats common to many “Web 2.0” websites. They will also be able to contribute their knowledge and experience through not only the discussion forums, but also in commenting features throughout the portal, and in the Green Life Guide, which is built on a “wiki” platform that allows user editing and contributions. “We want users to play a role in Green Options’ continued development,” said Anderson. “Many visitors will be complete ‘newbies’ who want information and guidance. Others will have more experience with incorporating green elements into their lives, and we want them to be able to contribute. Visitors have as much to learn from each other as they do from us.” Green Options plans to expand its offering of tools for user-generated content, including blogs for registered members. Other forthcoming features include a daily “e-course” on green practices for individuals and families, and interactive tools that allow users to assess the feasibility of larger investments in an environmentally-conscious lifestyle.
“Ultimately, Green Options will be the web site that users can visit to find out not only what they can do, but what practices and technologies will work most effectively for them as they move towards a lighter environmental footprint,” said Anderson. “Location and financial resources make a big difference in the options available; we’ll show users that, regardless of their situation, they can make positive choices for themselves and the environment.”
Green Options (greenoptions.com) was founded in late 2006 by CEO David Anderson (Berkeley) and Chief Technology Officer and Director of Marketing Shea Gunther (Portland, Maine). Jeff McIntire-Strasburg (St. Louis, Missouri) joined the company in November as Senior Editor and Director of Content.
