In an economic climate where fuel prices are continuing to rise, the innovative MiX Telematics In-Vehicle Monitoring System (IVMS) improves driver behaviour, helping deliver up to 10 per cent savings on annual fuel costs, a reduction in vehicle wear-and-tear, better passenger comfort and lower CO2 emissions.

Developed by leading South African-based technology company MiX Telematics, the solution consists of a device that is fitted to the vehicle’s electronics system and supported with the industry-leading RIBAS in-cab display that provides ‘real time’ feedback on driver performance across five categories Revving, Idling, Braking, Acceleration and Speeding (RIBAS). The solution provides fleet operators, managers and owners with an opportunity to identify where driver training is required to improve operational efficiencies.

Sean Flynn, Head of Business Development Australasia, said MiX Telematics’ IVMS, RIBAS Display and MiX Rovi devices were helping customers in a range of areas from reducing operating costs, to improving road safety and driver behaviour, through to providing a better passenger experience.

“Companies can monitor efficiency measures in real-time to constantly improve fleet performance and make decisions on whether further driver training is required to correct any issues identified. Our reporting services can also provide analysis of the data and show the direct impact on their business.

“At the same time, the drivers themselves can monitor their own behaviour with the RIBAS Display that is mounted to their dashboard and informs them through visual and audible warnings if they are close to exceeding the limits in terms of excessive revving, engine idling, harsh braking, harsh acceleration and over-speeding (the lights turn from green to amber). If they don’t correct their driving style accordingly, the RIBAS switches to red and the event is recorded as an infringement.

“The devices are set according to agreed company parameters and serve as in-cab driver trainers, allowing drivers to adjust their actions, if possible, to avoid a ‘red light’ event on their report. It is not intended as a punitive tool; its function rather is to help improve driver awareness and modify behaviour.”

Mr Flynn said MiX Telematics’ goal was to be the leading Australasian provider of information and related services for mobile assets.

“With our global footprint, a large and growing subscriber base and a history of operating successfully in international markets, we believe we’re in a strong position to realise this,” he said.

The MiX Telematics system has been installed in more than 10,000 buses across Spain, Germany, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom, along with thousands in South Africa and most recently in 1,100 vehicles operated by the NZ Bus fleet.

“A long-term trial with Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) from Germany revealed a net saving of 2,200 Euros per year per vehicle,” Mr Flynn said,“while another customer, RATP London United, achieved a 17 per cent reduction in their accident rate, and a 10 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency following the implementation of a customised risk reduction programme.

“To highlight the potential impact within the Australian market, there are more than 42,000 businesses operating in the road freight transport industry generating combined annual revenue of $48billion, according to an IBISWorld Market Research Report from May 2013.”

“There is an opportunity here to generate significant savings across the board for both light and heavy vehicle operators, including the bus and coach industry,” he added.

A recognised global leader and provider of fleet management, driver safety and vehicle tracking solutions, MiX Telematics has been operating in Australia since 2000 and boasts an impressive list of local bus and coach clients, including Murray’s Coaches, Greyhound Australia, Bus Queensland and Dyson Bus Services.

The company, with offices in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, continues to innovate and has aggressive plans to grow its business by 30 per cent year-on-year.

MiX Telematics can be visited at the Australian Bus & Coach Show from 25-26 September at booths 5, 6, 7 and 8. The show is being held at the Sydney Showground.
