The announcement was made by Newell Turner, editorial director of the Hearst Design Group. Smith will report to Turner and Hearst Magazines President David Carey, and will start in his new role on September 3. He succeeds Dara Caponigro, who previously announced she will be leaving at the end of summer.
Smith, who will relocate to New York City, has been editorial director of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles since April 2008. He rejoined the brand after a period as senior editor of Southern Accents, having previously led AH&L from January 2003 to June 2007. Prior to that, Smith was a project coordinator for Apple at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. From 2000 to 2001, he was senior editor at Wiesner Publishing and began his career as editorial director of New South Publishing, Inc.
“Clint has devoted his career to covering style, design and decoration, and there is no one better qualified to take the helm of VERANDA,” Turner said. “His strong relationships with designers and manufacturers are a tremendous asset, and his passion for great design will inspire readers of every issue.”
“With its elegant yet unpretentious voice, VERANDA is unparalleled in its commitment to gracious living, and I couldn’t be more excited to lead the magazine into its next chapter,” Smith said. “Building upon its strengths, I look forward to continuing VERANDA’s legacy of delivering the very best home decoration, style, jewelry, travel, culture and more, and am thrilled to join the Hearst team.”
Smith is a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
