In order to meet the fast growing global market demand for its innovative chelating agent, BASF is investigating several different options to expand and globalize its Trilon® M (Methylglycinediacetic acid) production capacity including plant expansions and investments into new production facilities. First results from such investigations are expected before the end of 2013.
Anticipating changes in the global home care and industrial & institutional cleaning (I&I) markets, BASF started up its first world scale Trilon® M production facility in 2010. The market introduction has been very successful and customers prefer to use Trilon® M over other alternatives in many different applications, such as industrial and institutional cleaners and automatic dishwashing products.
“By investigating the expansion of our production capacity for Trilon® M, produced exclusively by BASF, we are looking for ways to support our customers in contributing to a sustainable development”, said Gabriel Tanbourgi, President Care Chemicals. “Trilon® M is readily biodegradable and improves the cleaning effect of detergents and cleaners in household applications as well as in industrial use.”
BASF supplies Trilon® M mainly to the detergents and cleaners industry. BASF’s chelating agent Trilon® M offers a good price/performance ratio. Thus, it has emerged as the preferred alternative to phosphates in modern, high-performance, ecological dishwashing detergents.
The outstanding eco-toxicological and toxicological profile of Trilon® M has been confirmed by extensive long-term studies. “BAS F’s customers have the assurance that they will be able to use Trilon® M in their formulations in the long term,” said Dr. Thomas Greindl, Vice President Global Development Home Care, I&I and Formulation Technologies. “The Home Care and I&I team of BASF enables formulation choices for our customers to support them on their path toward sustainable solutions.”
BASF manufactures its chelating agents at its Ludwigshafen site as well as in Lima, Ohio, and Guaratinguetá, Brazil. Trilon® M is available worldwide in liquid and various solid forms.
Chelating agents increase the cleaning action of detergent and dishwasher products, as well as industrial and all-purpose cleaners, by reducing the concentration of metal ions in aqueous solutions. At the same time, they convert poorly soluble compounds into ones that are readily soluble in water.
