The advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) market in Japan is highly competitive, compelling vehicle manufacturers to offer unique features to establish a distinct brand identity. In fact, ADAS solutions' importance as a key product differentiation factor for both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and vehicle buyers has aided market development in the country.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (automotive.frost.com), Analysis of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Market in Japan, finds that the market earned revenues of more than $209.4 million in 2012 and estimates this to reach $2,195.1 million in 2018. The ADAS technologies covered in this research include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, emergency brake assist, blind spot detection, night vision, parking assistance and smart parking assistance systems.
The emergence of low-cost systems has increased ADAS installations in the small and mini-car segments and spurred market growth in Japan.
"Japanese OEMs' promotional campaigns highlighting the advantages and benefits of ADAS have improved customer awareness and fuelled sales," said Frost & Sullivan Automotive and Transportation Consultant Takashi Morimoto. "Tax and insurance incentives, along with the need for vehicle safety and convenience, have encouraged customers to spend on ADAS technologies and contributed to market revenues."
However, the high costs of intelligent technologies such as night vision solutions have curbed investments from potential customers. ADAS' complex operating functions, which require seamless integration with vehicle systems for superior functioning, have added to overall costs and restrained uptake.
To ensure market expansion, OEMs need to work with various suppliers including camera, image processing and algorithm experts to introduce simpler and low-cost safety systems in the market.
"OEMs must also look to tailor their ADAS products to suit various segments," noted Morimoto. "Building simpler, affordable ADAS solutions for models in the mini, small and multi-purpose vehicle segments, and integrated, high-end systems for luxury models in the upper-mid, large and sport utility vehicle segments will encourage uptake."
Offering integrated solutions will further enable ADAS vendors to widen their consumer base in Japan.
