Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 2013/04/15 - One of the first external ratifications Meliá Hotels International received for its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility was inclusion in the only socially responsible index on the Spanish stock exchange: FTSE4Good Ibex - Solmelia.com.
• The first hotel company to form part of the index in 2008;
• FTSE4Good is one of the most prestigious international indices related to transparency, ethics, environmental management, climate change mitigation, and respect for human rights.
Aimed at investors concerned with the commitment by companies to taking into account environmental and social factors in their corporate governance and decision making, the FTSE4Good identifies companies that best meet these criteria from over a thousand companies listed internationally.
Meliá (melia.com) has remained in the index since 2008, successfully complying with an audit every six months on environmental management, climate change mitigation, human and labour rights, the fight against corruption, and responsible management.
Always present in the philosophy and values of its founder, Gabriel Escarrer, the ethical and sustainable commitment of the Spanish hotel company was first formally expressed in a Sustainability Policy published 2008 which contained the company’s most important commitments and strategic priorities in relation to the community, the environment, culture and ethics.
Since then, Meliá has worked hard to prioritize areas such as child protection, the integration of the disabled, efforts to reduce climate change, the cultural promotion of destinations, corporate governance and ethical commitment. As the Chairman has often said,“Hotel companies provide a privileged platform for raising awareness on sustainability amongst the millions of people who interact with us, whether our guests, our employees or the communities in our different destinations”.
In 2012 the company renewed its commitment to children through its strategic alliance with UNICEF, and to the disabled in collaboration with the ONCE Foundation. It also approved its first Code of Ethics, Complaints Channel and Equality Plan, while continuing to make progress in the measurement and control of its ecological and carbon footprint through its participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project and the SAVE project for energy and water efficiency. This latter project has succeeded in reducing CO2 emissions per stay by 8.9% and water consumption per stay by 13.7%. In 2013 the hotel company will publish the emission figures for individual hotels taking part in the SAVE project for first time. Similarly, at the end of 2012 Meliá launched a pilot Responsible Purchasing Project in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, which is expected to be introduced in other hotels next year.
