The need to improve operational efficiency and resource utilisation will be the major driver for adopting Advanced Process Control (APC) and Process Optimization (PO) solutions in the Middle East. A majority of upcoming greenfield and brownfield projects in the region will look at implementing these solutions to stay ahead of the competition.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (industrialautomation.frost.com), Middle East Advanced Process Control (APC) and Process Optimization (PO) Market, finds that the APC and PO market was valued at around USD 50 million in 2011 and is estimated to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) in excess of 6 per cent until 2016. To get more insights on the key factors that shape the adoption trends of various automation solutions in the Middle East and view a recording of the complimentary Webinar, click here.

"One of the most constant and important drivers for the Middle East market is the need to boost plant operational efficiency and resource utilisation," explained said Frost & Sullivan Analyst for Industrial Automation & Process Control Practice. "Focusing on process optimization reduces plant downtime, thereby increasing plant yield."

Increasing global demand, paralleled by the need to sustain existing oil reserves, is compelling oil exploration companies in the region to adopt APC and PO solutions. Apart from enhancing operational efficiency, these solutions enable plants to reduce their carbon footprints by regulating energy consumption levels.

While end users are willing to incorporate APC systems on a wider scale, the presence of legacy field instruments and control systems hampers their adoption in existing plants. System complexity is further restraining immediate uptake.

"Due to the absence of a proper support system, APC cannot perform to its fullest potential," noted Frost & Sullivan Analyst. "Hence, there is a need for APC vendors to understand the entire plant process of their customers and then provide the appropriate solution that could blend well with the existing systems."

Nevertheless, there will be steady demand for APC and PO in planned greenfield and expansion projects, where the issue of integration with existing instruments or control system does not arise.

"Automation vendors need to focus on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, namely Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar, where end users realise the benefits of advanced solutions," advised Frost & Sullivan Analyst. "Moreover, the expansion of the hydrocarbon sector in these countries will reinforce growth potential."
