About the acquisition
Who is FLIR Systems Inc?
FLIR Systems, Inc. is a world leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of sensor systems that enhance perception and awareness. The company's advanced thermal imaging and threat detection systems are used for a wide variety of imaging, thermography, and security applications, including airborne and ground-based surveillance, condition monitoring, research and development, manufacturing process control, search and rescue, drug interdiction, navigation, transportation safety, border and maritime patrol, environmental monitoring, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) detection.
FLIR conducts business in more than 100 countries around the globe. The company had a turnover of $1.5B in 2011 and employs nearly 3,000 people worldwide.
Why is FLIR acquiring Traficon?
The integration of Traficon into FLIR will allow the latter to achieve further growth in the traffic market. Traficon and FLIR Systems have been working on joint projects on numerous occasions, combining Traficon’s video detection algorithms with FLIR’s thermal imaging technology. In the US for instance, Traficon and FLIR have been developing detection products based on thermal imaging for efficient intersection control. In the course of these frequent collaborations, synergies between both companies became apparent.
Through this acquisition, FLIR Systems expects to increase the pace of the adoption of FLIR technology in the increasing market for video-based traffic control solutions across the world. Apart from this, Traficon’s video analytics capabilities will be included into the other imaging lines of business offered by FLIR systems.
What’s in it for Traficon?
Within FLIR, Traficon will represent the company’s traffic center of competence. The acquisition will grant Traficon easy access to innovative technologies that will allow the company to develop better detection solutions for our customers.
When did the acquisition take place?
The acquisition was completed on Friday, December 28th, 2012.
About the Traficon brand and products
What will happen to the Traficon products?
You will still be able to rely on the same Traficon products for your project. However, because of obvious synergies between FLIR Systems and Traficon, the product portfolio will certainly expand in the future.
Will Traficon keep its name and brand?
No, there will be a gradual rebranding from Traficon to FLIR. This means that the name Traficon (traficon.com) will disappear as a company name, although it will continue to live on as a product series name (e.g. the Traficon VIP3D.1). This also means that Traficon logos and other branding elements will be gradually replaced by FLIR corporate branding elements. In the near future, the Traficon website will be redirected to the FLIR website.
Will all products developed by Traficon/FLIR now be based on thermal imaging?
No, Traficon has always been looking for the most optimal technology for its customers’ ITS projects. In the past, Traficon already worked with other technologies than video imaging, including thermal imaging and radar. Traficon will continue to follow that path of development and innovation.
