The Musée des Confluences in Lyon will open its doors in 2014. The international architectural firm COOP HIMMELB(L)AU has designed the museum’s modern glass and steel architecture. BASF’s coatings are contributing to both the extraordinary design and to the longevity of the building.
In the future, museum visitors will be able to engage with issues associated with the future of humanity and our planet regarding technology, biology and ethics. The architecture of the new building connects two structures that couldn’t be less alike. The “crystal,” an expansive, angular steel façade construction, will rise up to face the city. Toward the river will be the “cloud,” a basket-like, arch-shaped structure consisting of metal trusses and glass.
Thousands of steel panels will prominently sparkle in the sun, reflecting light and colors of the surroundings and lending elegance to the body. A special metallic effect is responsible for achieving the architects’ vision. A BASF powder coating is used to obtain the effect. The metallic effect of the heavy façade panels is created with a special BASF liquid coating, providing a homogeneous appearance of the building. “We offer an ideal one-stop solution for the various uses and requirements,” said Michael Hauptstock, head of Sales for General Industry Powder.
In addition to providing the façade’s metallic paint effects, BASF’s coatings also protect its dazzling appearance from weathering impacts and UV radiation, which preserves the longevity of the materials. By 2014, around two metric tons of powder coating and ten metric tons of liquid coating are expected to be applied at the Musée des Confluences.
