Plast-Tec Plastering Systems Ltd has been handed a Chartered Institute of Building Award in recognition for its dedication to training.

The family run Sheffield company scooped the award during the Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire 2012 Awards ceremony held at Cutlers Hall in Sheffield, beating of stiff competition from much larger companies.
Managing Director of Plast-Tec Mark Rice was naturally elated at the news and was almost lost for words whilst receiving the award from sponsors Linear recruitment.

“I just can’t believe it! We’re delighted that the CIOB felt that our training system was good enough to be rewarded with this accolade. Every year we give work placement opportunities to kids from the local schools including Notre Dame High School, Birley Secondary School, and Penistone Grammer. A lot of the kids that enjoy their time with us come back whilst at College and do a work placement NVQ. This way we can give back something to the community and support the younger generation by offering them jobs after they complete their training with us.”

The feeling of offering the young opportunities in construction was shared in Chief Operating Officer for the Chartered Institute Of Building, Bridget Bartlett’s speech during the evening where she stated that the Institute intend to “break down the barriers encountered by young people entering construction”.

But it wasn’t just Plast-Tec that enjoyed being recognised for their community spirit. Although being pipped at the post for the Training Award, Morrison were recognised for their partnership work with Shiloh in Rotherham and picked up the Award for Corporate responsibility. Shiloh is a Charity that aims to help adults in the locality of Rotherham living in poverty, transition, oppression and homelessness to rebuild their lives, by providing food, support and necessary information to enable them to connect with health, housing and hope. At first glance it might seem that there was an element of a hidden agenda in the form of a great PR opportunity when Morrison agreed to match every hour staff were paid to work on the project with another. However staff and directors alike all took time to have lunch with the people that visited the centre at which point the gravity of the situation was realised. Talking about the project after the award, Mark Waterhouse Partnering Director – Yorkshire for Morrison said that he had the easiest job in the company, while his staff gave up their evenings and weekends over a period of two years to transform the Shiloh building from one that was about to fail to something that lifts the spirits of all that enters, all he had to do was to say yes to the project. In reality without the determination and vision of Mark and the staff at Morrison, Rotherham would have been left without a much needed force to assist vulnerable adults.

A number of other South Yorkshire companies won Awards, including, Stadia Ltd, VHE Construction, Symphony and Wates, all of whom showed that even though economic times are tough for construction, South Yorkshire companies can lead the way in taking positive steps towards recovery, something which was summed up by Paul Senior Centre Chair for Sheffield & South Yorkshire CIOB when commenting on the state of the construction industry in South Yorkshire, saying how the CCISY entries ‘reflected all the excellent work still being carried out in our industry’.
