Symphony Teleca Corporation (STC), the services organization dedicated exclusively to helping clients manage the global convergence of software, the cloud and connected devices, today announced at the Telematics Munich 2012 conference the launch of a robust Echo Cancellation/Noise Reduction (ECNR) solution for use in GENIVI in-vehicle-infotainment platforms. The GENIVI Alliance is a non-profit industry alliance committed to driving the broad adoption of an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) open-source development platform.
Background noise and echoes can have a huge impact on the audio quality and voice recognition success rate of in-vehicle hands-free communication systems. For a voice-activated human-machine-interface, downgrading the recognition accuracy by only 10% through non-suppressed background noise will render it useless for many applications, such as dialing a phone number. The frustration and safety implications to drivers make an effective ECNR solution critical for automotive manufacturers.
Symphony Teleca joined GENIVI in 2010 to help to support the development and evolution of the platform. STC is currently working within the GENIVI Connectivity Expert Group and directly with leading automotive companies to integrate STC’s PulseAudio ECNR interface into their IVI platforms. STC will be showcasing the ECNR solution at future industry events. The solution leverages state of the art algorithms to provide high performance, robust noise suppression and echo cancellation with minimum complexity and footprint. Based on the implementation, GENIVI interfaces shall be specified to control the run time behavior of the ECNR for example, to trigger certain profiles like switching from handset to hands free.
“Highly functional in-car communications are crucial for drivers to stay connected for work or play. Poor speech quality as well as bad voice recognition rates for speech enabled human-machine-interfaces can lead to severe safety problems making our work with GENIVI so critically important,” said Dean Miles, Symphony Teleca’s Senior Vice President, Automotive. “At this year’s Telematics Munich 2012, we will showcase our latest innovations for in-car communications and audio enhancements including ECNR and Open Source In-Vehicle-Infotainment.”
