Hexagon Metrology has created the ROMER Bike Measurement System, a mobile 3D measurement solution fully approved by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for the measurement of bike frames at racing events.
The ROMER Bike Measurement System is based on Hexagon Metrology’s portable measuring arm, the ROMER Absolute Arm with integrated laser scanner. The system includes 3D inspection software configured for user independent non-contact measurement of bike frame geometry, ensuring total transparency and stability in professional bike racing. The ROMER Bike Measurement System is the UCI’s approved instrument for checking bike frame legality, irrespective of where the measurement takes place.
Featuring ROMER technology, the scanner gives excellent performance even on high gloss carbon fiber surfaces and the difficult to reach areas typical of professional bike frames today. During measurement the integrated laser scanner collects 30,000 3D points off the frame every second, allowing the user to create a highly accurate 3D model of the frame itself. Thanks to the ROMER Absolute Arm’s lack of warm-up time and the software’s dedicated eight simple steps, the user can measure an entire bike frame, compare it to its respective CAD model and generate a final measurement report in less than ten minutes.
Prof. Jan-Anders Månson, Director of the EPFL’s Laboratory of Polymer and Composite Technology, said: “Hexagon Metrology has made it possible for us to set up a powerful tool according to UCI requirements. The ROMER Bike Measurement System helps to make sure that the dimensions of racing bikes are completely above board, even during a race. Its mobility and performance on complex objects such as bike frames add significant value to competitive sports.”
ROMER is the originator of the portable measuring arm (first created in 1986 in Montoire, France). The technological advance, the know-how, the demand for constant quality in the manufacture of the arms, the international presence are the main strengths of ROMER. Other products from ROMER include scanning probes for reverse engineering, non contact probes for tube inspection and milling of raw materials.
