Reading, Berks, United Kingdom, 2012/06/19 - The UK private business sector is well-placed to make the necessary investments to help move out of the double-dip recession, but only just. This research was completed by Shirlaws coaching, based on the responses of 144 UK business owners and CEOs.
Newly released data for the first quarter showed that private businesses are positively placed to manage the double-dip recession, but only just.
Overall, the UK private business sector scored 57 points on the Business Stages Index for the first quarter of 2012. A score of 50 represents neutral expectations of growth.
The Business Stages Index is published by business performance and coaching firm Shirlaws, based on their research into entrepreneurs and privately-owned companies.
Shirlaws CEO John Rosling said the Index was important because it combined underlying business feelings with measurements of profit and growth.
“Most research focuses only on the tangibles, such as revenue, which means they are not fully capturing the current experience of business owners,” he said.
The Business Stages Index asks nineteen questions, combining tangible facts such as staff numbers and revenue growth with intangible business elements including vision, feelings, and work-life balance.
“I’m proud that we ask questions like ‘How do you feel about the future of your business?’,” Mr Rosling said.
“It demonstrates that we understand the entrepreneur’s motivation and experience right now. A slight majority are well-placed, but many businesses remain stuck and unsure how to move forward.”
The Business Stages Index uses the responses of business owners, CEOs, and directors to place their business on the Shirlaws Stages Framework.
This framework maps the journey that all businesses move through, with some Stages representing a greater potential for investment and growth.
These scores create the Index from 0-100, where 50 represents an overall neutral position for the private business sector.
