WuInstall combines easy handling with great functionality and since its release in 2009 it has been downloaded and used by more than 30.000 organizations all over the world.
Being a free spin-off tool of the System Management suite XEOX by the Austrian based company hs2n, WuInstall gives the administrator full control over Windows-Updates: It checks the WSUS or Microsoft Update for patches to be applied to a workstation or server. These patches can be downloaded and installed whenever the WuInstall command is triggered.
Without WuInstall, patching Windows systems can be an exhausting task: After installing the operating system it takes quite some effort to bring it up to date. Moreover, on Microsoft Patch Day administrators have to perform a lot of boring routine tasks as the patches need to be installed and confirmed step by step. Some system reboots are usually also needed. Especially with servers these reboots can be a serious problem as they are supposed to be up and running and should only be updated during scheduled maintenance slots.
“Our goal was to give administrators full control over the Windows patch process and make it unattended at the same time. The result was the command-line tool WuInstall”, says hs2n manager Markus Huber. WuInstall is a part of XEOX, a software suite that is capable of managing the whole IT infrastructure of a company. In 2009 the XEOX developers decided to spin off the functionality and to make WuInstall an independent command line tool. Until now, the application is used by ten thousands of companies all over the world. Enterprises in every size and across every industry rely on it as well as schools, universities, military and public authorities.
Since WuInstall is a command line tool it can be called by any other program and therefore it is possible to integrate it in every patch management process. For instance, it can be run to patch systems in a login or shutdown script so that one can work without being bothered by automatic update requests or it can also be used together with system management tools like SCCM.
The functionality of WuInstall has considerably increased from the initial version 1.1 to the current commercial version of the application, WuInstall Pro: For example the administrator can choose in several ways which patches should be installed, depending on severity level, classification, Update-ID or product. Every step of the installation process can be recorded in a logfile. Other features include the possibility to bypass the WSUS server on demand, to cache downloaded updates in the local network in order to save bandwidth or to include unattended reboot cycles in the update process. The basic version WuInstall 1.1 is freeware, the price for WuInstall Pro depends on how many workstations or servers are going to be patched with WuInstall.
