• Teplichnoe’s Greenhouse Operation in Saransk to Use GE’s Jenbacher Units to Provide Reliable Power and Heat;
• Project Illustrates Increased Popularity of Distributed Power Solutions in Russia-CIS Region.

With more Russian industries turning to on-site power technologies to reduce their operational costs and increase their energy security, state-owned vegetable supplier Teplichnoe will install three GE (NYSE: GE) natural gas-fired, ecomagination-qualified Jenbacher cogeneration units at its greenhouse production facilities in the city of Saransk. The capital city of the Mordovia Republic is located 650 kilometers east of Moscow.

Teplichnoe is one of the main suppliers of vegetables as well as canned and dried food in the Mordovia Republic. As part of its plans to boost output at its production facilities, the company is building the new energy center to provide more reliable and cost-effective on-site power and heat for its vegetable production facilities.

Three of GE’s 1-megawatt (MW) J320 Jenbacher gas engines will power Teplichnoe’s new energy center. The units will provide heat to the food company’s massive greenhouse facility while the electricity from the plant will support other production activities at the site.

GE will ship its Jenbacher units to Saransk during the second quarter of 2012. Scheduled to begin operating in the third quarter of 2012, the new cogeneration plant will utilize a design that offers capacity for future expansion. The project is being supported by ZAO INTMA, one of GE’s authorized distributors for Jenbacher gas engines in the Russian Federation.

“When we decided we needed a more cost-effective, high-quality, on-site supply of electricity and heat to support our production facilities, we selected GE’s Jenbacher cogeneration technology because it has a proven record of reliability and efficiency that we require to achieve our operational and competitive goals,” said Sergey Ruzankin, the deputy manufacturing director of State Unitary Enterprise Greenhouse complex Teplichnoe.

Teplichnoe is among a growing number of Russian companies that are looking to improve the reliability of their energy supplies and achieve greater savings through the use of distributed power generation.

“Our Jenbacher cogeneration project with Teplichnoe illustrates how GE’s energy management solutions are enabling food and beverage companies throughout the world to understand their energy demand requirements and then identify potential savings through the use of more efficient generation and transmission technologies,” said Cristiano Tortelli, president and CEO for GE Energy, CEE, Russia & CIS.

GE leverages the company’s entire product and services portfolio to develop innovative long-term solutions that help food and beverage industry customers reduce the costs and environmental impacts associated with using energy and water for production. For example, the Teplichnoe project illustrates how GE is helping customers worldwide to generate reliable on-site electricity and heat at the point of use through its comprehensive suite of distributed power solutions ranging in size from 119 kilowatts to 100 MW.

The fuel flexibility of GE’s Jenbacher gas engines and other distributed power generation technologies also promotes greater regional energy and economic security by enabling countries to use more of their own energy resources to meet their domestic needs.

“We are seeing a continued strong demand for GE’s innovative energy solutions as more industrial operators seek reliable and proven technologies to solve their pressing energy, economic and environmental challenges,” said Dmitry Glushich, general director, ZAO INTMA.

More than 4,300 natural gas-fueled Jenbacher cogeneration units with a combined electrical output of about 6,200 MW have been delivered worldwide. By installing the Jenbacher gas engine cogeneration systems instead of separate equipment for power and heat generation, customers have saved the equivalent of 2.3 million tons of CO2 emissions.

The Russia-CIS region represents an important growth market for GE as more customers embrace various distributed power applications—including industrial cogeneration—to bring the sources of energy generation closer to end users and improve local energy security.

GE has been operating in Russia since the early 20th century and today has 2,500 employees in the country. GE is represented across the country in multiple industries including healthcare, transportation, aviation, electric power, oil and gas, water treatment, financial services, media, appliances, lighting and intelligent platforms.

In 2010, GE opened the Energy Technology Center, a service center that is located in the Kaluga Region and dedicated to supporting the company’s installed base of equipment. In September of 2011, GE signed a joint venture agreement with INTER RAO UES and UEC to localize production of GE’s 6FA heavy duty gas turbines in Rybinsk, Russia. Since March 2008, GE’s MS5002E gas turbines have been manufactured, tested and sold in Russia as ‘LADOGA 32’ units under a licensing agreement between GE and REP Holding (REPH).
