The following appointments are effective today:

Jack Sweeney, 65, becomes chairman of the Houston Chronicle. Sweeney was president and publisher of the Chronicle since 2000.
Thomas A. Stephenson, 62, is named publisher of the Chronicle, joining the Houston paper from the San Antonio Express-News where he was president and publisher.
John T. O’Loughlin, 44, joins Hearst as president of the Chronicle from the Los Angeles Times Media Group, where most recently he was chief revenue officer and executive vice president of advertising and marketing.

The announcements were made by Hearst Corporation CEO Frank A. Bennack, Jr., and Mark E. Aldam, president of Hearst Newspapers. A replacement for Stephenson at the Express-News will be named later in the day.

“These appointments speak to Hearst’s commitment to our important Texas media properties and the communities they serve, now and in the future,” Bennack said. “All three of these outstanding executives offer Hearst Newspapers a strong mix of talent and vision at this important time in developing the multiplatform future of local media businesses.”

Aldam added,“I am thrilled to have such a talented leadership team executing our business strategies across the Chronicle and our Texas community papers. This is a very skilled ensemble with the right balance of expertise to effectively lead our businesses.”

The Houston Chronicle, one of the largest newspapers in the United States, was founded in 1901 and was acquired by Hearst in 1987. It is available for iPad and the newspaper's website, Chron.com, is widely regarded as one of the top newspaper websites, receiving more than 75 million page views, on average, per month.

Jack Sweeney
Sweeney becomes chairman of the Chronicle after more than 11 years as president and publisher and more than 30 years with the paper. He first joined the Chronicle as advertising director in 1980 and was promoted to director of sales and marketing in 1983, vice president of sales and marketing in 1986, and vice president and general manager in 1991. Sweeney was named president and associate publisher in 1998 and publisher in 2000.

A graduate of King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sweeney is an active participant in the Newspaper Association of America, having served as a member of the organization's board of directors and executive committee. He is also a board member of the Texas Daily Newspaper Association.

Thomas A. Stephenson
In his new role as publisher of the Chronicle, Stephenson will have operating responsibility for the Houston daily as well as Hearst’s Texas community papers. In San Antonio, he was president and publisher of the paper since 2005 and, before that, executive vice president and general manager.

Stephenson joined the Express-News in March 1997 as senior vice president of operations and administration following a 22-year career with Knight-Ridder Newspapers. He holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota.

John T. O’Loughlin
As president of the Chronicle, O’Loughlin will focus on the revenue and marketing operations of the paper, in addition to new product development. He comes to Hearst after more than 20 years with Tribune Company, most recently at the Los Angeles Times Media Group, where he was chief revenue officer and executive vice president of advertising and marketing since 2009.

Prior to six years with Tribune in Los Angeles, O’Loughlin was at Chicago Tribune for 15 years, finally as publisher and general manager of RedEye. He has an MBA from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.
