• Industry standard for the responsible use of water in Europe in force;
• Six-month pilot scheme at BASF ’s Ludwigshafen site.
Companies and agricultural organizations can use a Europe-wide standard to assess the sustainability of their water management practices. The European Water Stewardship standard was jointly developed over a three-year period by NGOs, governments and businesses – with a significant role played by BASF. “BASF’s water experts worked on the entire process and made a key contribution to the development of the European Water Stewardship standard”, said Friedrich Barth, deputy chairman of the European Water Partnership (EWP), an independent NGO that initiated and coordinated the project.
Companies and agricultural organizations can monitor and improve their water usage on the basis of the following criteria: volume extracted, water pollution, biodiversity and water management. BASF tested the system for six months in a pilot scheme at its site in Ludwigshafen. Experts examined how to apply the system in practice and made suggestions for improvement. BASF will be introducing the standard itself: By 2020 BASF will review its existing water management systems at all sites located in “water stress areas” worldwide and introduce new, sustainable systems wherever necessary. “The access to clean water is becoming increasingly important ”, said Dr. Ulrich von Deessen, head of BASF’s Competence Center Environment, Health and Safety. “With these measures, BASF is making a voluntary contribution to a responsible use of the resource water.”
