Representing the latest addition to its award-winning EdgeWall portfolio of network-security products, the EdgeWall 8800 is purpose-built for the most demanding enterprise-network environments.
It is the first NAC product to deliver all of the following key security components: wire-speed authenticated and validated access to all users throughout the network; protection from security threats and malicious behavior; continuous compliance inspection; and a fully integrated Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) engine. All of this functionality is delivered for as little as $25 per endpoint – the lowest cost per endpoint of any current NAC solution.
A Market Ripe for NAC
IDC predicts that the market for identity and access management solutions, including NAC, will grow at a rate of nearly 25 percent per year to reach $2 billion in 2010. This trend is evidenced by Vernier’s significant growth in EdgeWall customer adoption, bringing the company’s installed base to 1,000 customers worldwide and securing its leadership position in the NAC appliance market sector.
"The enterprise IT infrastructure is undergoing a fundamental change in which security and networking strategies are converging,” said Chris Christiansen, program vice president for IDC's Security Products and Services. “NAC solutions, such as Vernier’s EdgeWall, are bellwethers in this new IT paradigm, and they represent a significant growth market in the next five years.”
In an October “NAC Market and Technology Trends Survey” of IT security professionals, Vernier found that more than half of the 400 respondents consider NAC solutions to be an essential part of their near-term network infrastructure strategies. In the same survey, 42 percent of respondents cited a high-priority need for IDP capabilities to ensure network compliance at all times. EdgeWall 8800 was designed with this in mind and is positioned to meet customers’ most critical needs.
Addressing Customers’ Biggest Pain Points
Customers face several issues maintaining network security. Threat issues are difficult to contain; continuous monitoring of end user activity is labor-intensive; and compliance reporting on regulatory mandates is cumbersome. EdgeWall 8800 addresses these issues by delivering continual inspection of traffic via a custom-built IDP engine that leverages NAC capabilities. Unlike other solutions that only inspect traffic at pre-connect, Vernier delivers continuous post-connect traffic inspection to help organizations proactively ensure continuous compliance to IT policies.
"Protecting a network of more than 600 endpoints from viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware and other malware is no small feat,” said Keith Richardson, Technical Engineer Level III of Cazenovia College. “Vernier Networks’ EdgeWall 8800 is the only solution that offered us a comprehensive NAC solution for managing threats, while also showing us policy-compliance violations in real time – when there’s still a chance for remediation.”
Introducing the EdgeWall 8800
"EdgeWall 8800 is the first system to integrate IDP with a proven NAC solution to offer maximum protection from saboteurs, malware, spyware, viruses and worms,” said Rod Murchison, vice president of marketing for Vernier Networks. “The solution makes high-performance NAC solutions available to the broadest range of customers by using superior design to offer the industry’s lowest cost per endpoint.”
Leveraging five years of NAC expertise, Vernier Networks designed EdgeWall 8800 for deployments where extensive security capabilities must be aggregated between the access and core switching layers of the network. With a throughput capacity as high as 40Gbps, EdgeWall 8800 is the highest performance NAC platform that authenticates, validates and authorizes compliant endpoints; quarantines and remediates infected devices; and continuously inspects traffic for policy compliance. In addition, EdgeWall 8800 is the first NAC platform to detect policy-compliance violations at layers 2 through 7 in real time, identify the users associated with this traffic, and immediately quarantine and remediate their endpoint devices.
To ensure maximum flexibility and cost control, EdgeWall 8800 gives customers a wide range of deployment options for in-line network access control. The platform is packaged in a four-slot chassis design with optional interface cards, allowing customers to deploy configurations that best suit their current needs and then easily expand to meet future needs. In addition, the appliance can sit between access and distribution layers or access and core layers, adapting to different environments.
Centralized management, configuration and policy distribution is handled by the Vernier Control Server appliance, which also supports the existing family of EdgeWall products geared towards wireless, remote access and guest access deployments. Vernier’s EdgeWall 8800 is currently available with pricing starting at $29,990.
