Dr. Günther Weymans, head of the Technical Rubber Products business unit of specialty chemicals company LANXESS, has been awarded the honorary title of Professor h.c. by the Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST), Qingdao, China. Experts worldwide consider QUST a prestigious center of Chinese rubber applications technology that has considerable significance beyond the Chinese market. The presentation ceremony was held during the LANXESS Rubber Days held in Beijing at the beginning of December 2011.
“I am very proud to receive this honor,” said Professor (h.c.) Dr. Günther Weymans. “It is testimony to the high level of close and fruitful cooperation that we have achieved with the research scientists of Qingdao University of Science. The synthetic rubber pioneer LANXESS, one of the acknowledged technology leaders in the rubber sector, and QUST, an excellent research and training center of international renown with expertise in rubber, are two partners of equal standing. Exceptionally well trained young people are the basis for a sustainably successful future – and it is precisely such experts who graduate from Qingdao University. We are very proud to play our part through wide-ranging cooperation agreements.”
LANXESS has been engaged in ambitious projects in Qingdao for some time now. Back at the beginning of 2008, the synthetic rubber specialist set up its Rubber Research Center Qingdao (RRCQ) in the immediate vicinity of the university's campus, and the center's employees work closely with QUST experts. Overall, the company has invested around USD 16 million in this project. In 2009, the center expanded with the addition of an in-house pilot facility for the modeling of new rubber synthesis processes and production of new rubber grades and a new state-of-the-art rubber test lab that is now seamlessly integrated into the LANXESS R&D network. During the LANXESS Rubber Days in China a substantial extension of the cooperation with the Qingdao University of Science and Technology was announced; as part of a Rubber Excellence Partnership initiative LANXESS, together with the German Institute for Rubber Technology (DIK) based in Hanover, Germany, is supporting the writing of master dissertations at QUST.
