GE Healthcare, a leading provider of healthcare IT solutions, strongly commends the 50 Top hospitals recently recognized by Thomson Reuters for delivering high quality inpatient cardiovascular services leading to superior clinical outcomes and patient safety. The 13th Annual Survey recognizes leading institutions that enhance care while lowering cost and ensuring better operational efficiencies.
Nearly 20% (Nine of fifty) of the recognized hospitals selected for this prestigious recognition have deployed GE Healthcare’s Cardiovascular IT systems for cardiology specific documentation, workflows, and reporting across the continuum of cardiovascular care. GE also has CVIT systems installed at nearly half (22 of 50) of all honored facilities in July’s US News and World Report list of “‘The Top 50 Hospitals for Cardiology and Heart Surgery 2011-12.”

For the list, Thomson Reuters analyzed 2009 and 2010 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, Medicare cost reports, and CMS Hospital Compare data. Hospitals were scored based on key performance areas, including risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, and severity-adjusted average length of stay (LOS).
At hospitals recognized by Thomson Reuters, 97% of cardiovascular inpatients survive and about 96% remain complication-free, reflecting across-the-board cardiovascular care improvements over the past year. When compared with their peers, the top 50 had better risk-adjusted survival rates, lower complication and readmission rates, shorter lengths of stay and lower costs.

At hospitals named to the list, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients were 22.8% less likely to die and 10.1% less likely to experience a complication than non-winning hospitals. Moreover, their length of stay was 9.7% shorter and their cost per patient was 12% lower. Thomson Reuters predicts that if all hospitals performed at the same level as its top 50 cardiovascular facilities each year, 7,700 lives could be saved, 6,500 complications avoided, and the U.S. could reduce health care spending by $1 billion.

“GE Healthcare’s Centricity* Cardiology Solutions provide physicians with a single point of online access to the patient‘s complete cardiovascular medical record, helping them to make more timely and informed decisions, accelerating care and improving workflow.” said Sharon M. Delaney, Director of Cardiovascular Services at Chester County Hospital and Health System where GE Cardiology products have been in use since 2001. “This results in higher quality care delivery and high patient and provider satisfaction,” she continued.

“GE Healthcare has made a significant, strategic commitment to enabling fast and simple access to relevant patient clinical information for healthcare providers and their cardiologists”, said Jim Corrigan, vice president and general manager of GE Healthcare IT. “More than 550 healthcare institutions in the U.S., including large academic medical centers, Integrated Healthcare Networks (IHNs) and community hospitals, currently rely on GE’s Centricity Cardiology solutions to manage their cardiovascular patient data and images. We’re thrilled that some of those facilities are being recognized for the excellence in care they deliver every day and we look forward to continued partnership as they expand their excellence in the future.”
