Centrify Corporation, the leading provider of security and compliance solutions that centrally control, secure and audit access to cross-platform systems and applications using Active Directory, today announced that Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) is deploying its Centrify Suite 2012 solution to centralize all security and policy controls for its growing Macintosh and Linux user populations. Now, CHORI centrally controls access within its research community for its more than 500 systems in Active Directory — using the same methodology employed for Windows systems — for increased security and compliance.
CHORI is the internationally renowned biomedical research institute of Children’s Hospital and Research Center at Oakland. With world-class scientists and research centers known both nationally and internationally in multiple fields, CHORI is eighth in the nation for National Institutes of Health pediatric research funding.
“We were looking to get a better handle on the security, authentication and management of our systems, and now with Centrify we are meeting our needs in these areas,” said Ben Hanes, CHORI Senior Systems Analyst. “Centrify gives us an all-encompassing tool for improved management and flexibility, which does not add complexity or overhead for us. And, with our cloud strategy in the works, we can see how Centrify can help us when we move to the cloud, as well.”
According to Hanes, Apple representatives recommended Centrify to CHORI, which must also authenticate access to protected health information (PHI) in clinical research labs and comply with HIPAA. In addition to private patient information, these systems contain significant amounts of genetic data to help researchers match patients with DNA and discover how genetics might fit into treatments for conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and infectious diseases. Now with Centrify, CHORI sets controls and limits access of these systems, no matter what computing platform researchers use.
“Centrify easily integrates with our Mac and Linux users, and we don’t have to change the schema of Active Directory for these systems,” he said. “Management is in one place for all our systems at one time, which makes our lives easier. Now, instead of managing system authentication we can go out and be more available to help people in our operation, and provide better customer service within our research center.”
“CHORI is a leader in bridging basic science and clinical research in the treatment and prevention of human diseases, and we are pleased to enable centralized management of the authentication and security of their systems,” said Gary Taggart, VP of Worldwide Sales. “Centrify gives CHORI a more flexible and stable tool for managing the access controls and compliance of the various systems within their research center. Organizations worldwide are turning to Centrify to simplify the complexity of managing the security of systems in heterogeneous environments, and provide easy integration into their Active Directory authentication stores.”
