Telkom Cybernest will be receiving the 2011 South African Frost & Sullivan Green Excellence in Technology Innovation Award at the Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Best Practices Awards Banquet on Wednesday, 2 November 2011.
Based on its recent analysis of the data centre market, Frost & Sullivan has recognised Cybernest for its commitment to innovation and to the environment.
"Cybernest has delivered a data centre facility that is on par with the top 10% of energy efficient data centres in the world," says Frost & Sullivan's Information and Communication Technologies Business Unit Leader for Africa, Birgitta Cederstrom. "In addition to this, the company scored highest in design, capacity and eco-friendliness, when compared with the competition. They have also exceeded customer expectations with regards to cost savings, while reducing their carbon foot print."
Cybernest launched its custom-built data centre, Bellville 2, in Cape Town in November 2009. The centre requirements are on par with international standards in terms of capacity, availability and energy efficiency. Bellville 2 provides availability of up to 99.998%, which is in line with Uptime Institute Tier IV.
The data centre makes use of ozone-friendly gases. Lead batteries have been eliminated and energy efficient technologies, such as free air cooling, hot and cold aisle air designs are used. This technology ensures that the whole facility is not cooled to uncomfortable temperatures, but rather only those components that specifically require cooling.
"The free air cooling and hot aisle, cold aisle designed containment is the first in South Africa," comments Cederstrom. "It results in savings of 4.7 million kWh per annum, which is currently the highest energy savings within the market."
The design emphasis of Cybernest's data centre is focused on the ability to measure the power every resource consumes and then calculate the associated cost. Such consumption audits have facilitated the ability to pinpoint power guzzlers and make related changes.
"Cybernest's data centre has been built from the ground up, using best practice energy saving principles," concludes Cederstrom. "Green Grid recommendations are global best practice principles that bring data centres in line with modern demands for environmentally friendly and efficient business. In addition, Cybernest is compliant with the Montreal Protocol helping reduce the negative impact on the ozone layer."
As recipient of the Green Excellence in Technology Innovation Award, Cybernest is acknowledged for its exceptionally environment-friendly technology profile and business commitment as well as its demonstration of environmental accountability.
